Seminario impartido por Carlos Pedrós Alió
Liquid water is essential for life. Some organisms are able to grow or at least remain active at low water activities. For example, some fungi and yeasts are able to grown in high sugar foods. Likewise, bacteria have been found to be active in magnesium rich deep lakes at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. However, previous studies have not found metabolically active organisms below a water activity of 0.61. We have studied solar salterns devised to precipitate lithium chloride in the Salar de Atacama. These ponds provide a gradient of water activity down to values near 0.1. We were interested in determining which was the limit of life.
